Track And Field

Track and field involves several types of sports all related to running, throwing and jumping. The term “track and field” actually comes from the Greek work “athlon”, as in a contest. Track and field sports have origins dating back to 776 B.C.E and continue to thrive in modern times, most notably at the Olympics. There are two seasons for track and field: the indoor season, which is run during the winter months and an outdoor season, run in the spring and summer. Indoor tracks are about 200 meters and have 4-6 lanes. Outdoor tracks are ovals measuring over 400 meters in circumference.

Where To Find Track And Field Rules

Who invented track and field? Since track and field involves basic exercises and contests like running and throwing, we can rightly assume that track & field sports are as old as man himself. As for large and populated contests, the basic plan of track and field competition has roots in ancient Greece, where the first ever Olympic games were held. These contests featured track and field games such as discus, shot put and running that were antiquated in form and somewhat different than the Olympic games we see today. As history passed, and more ruthless empires emerged, the games became more violent involving contests like wrestling, chariot racing and gladiatorial combat. It wasn't until the year 1896 when the “official” Olympics were held, in which world records started to be kept.

Track and field rules can be very complex, even while the exercises remain simple in design. The Sport Spectator website has a review of the official rules, a breakdown of the history and more information related to track and field competition.
