For a number of years, USA Track And Field was known as The Athletics Congress, itself being a spin off of the Amateur Athletic Union. In 1878 William B. Curtis started the Amateur Athletic Union of New York City, an organization that governed the sport of track and field. This organization lasted over 100 years until 1979 when the very first Amateur Sports Act declared that the organization could no longer hold international franchises for more than a single sport.
