Women's Athletic
Professional sports may be thought of as a man's game but there are women's athletic sports, played by women who not only desire professional equality but who also love the game just as much as men do. There are women's athletics in high school, college and at the professional level. How did women's athletics begin?
The Beginning Of Women's Athletics In America
Though women's athletic games have been around for centuries, the professional organization of female athletes took place in 1941 when women's intercollegiate athletics was organized on a national level. During the next two decades, women athletes competed against each other at many colleges around the country. In 1956, there were three organizations supporting the athletic women: the National Association for Physical Education for College Women, the National Association for Girls' and Women's Sport, and the American Federation of College Women. The Association For Intercollegiate Athletics For Women followed in 1971, and sought to govern collegiate female athlete games as well as administer national championships. However, this organization eventually clashed with the NCAA and eventually discontinued its operation.
Today, athlete women – while not exactly having it easy – have more rights and more opportunities to excel. Congress passed laws in 1972 stating that colleges must allow female athletes the same opportunities for acceptance and advancement that it would give to men. Despite these rulings however, it does still seem that more athletic men get college scholarships than women.
